Resources on the Board Chair Role and Board Culture

We hope you enjoyed the blog post. Here are some addtional resources on the role of the board chair and the importance of culture in the boardroom.

The Board Chair Handbook

This book, written by Mindy R. Wertheimer, Ph.D., LCSW, focuses on helping board chairs carry out their responsibilities for the good of the organization. Whether you are a seasoned board chair wanting to brush up and learn something new, an incoming board chair seeking knowledge and skills, or a person considering the possibility of becoming a board chair, this book is intended to be user-friendly and practical. The guidance will also be useful to chief executives, other management personnel who interact with the board chair (including operations officers, development directors, financial officers, and marketing directors), and consultants who work with nonprofit organizations.

Culture of Inquiry

In this book, we explain how to create a culture of inquiry within the boardroom — one marked by mutual respect and constructive debate that leads to sound and shared decision making. We detail how to develop an environment where board members solicit, acknowledge, and respectfully listen to different points of view; where they seek more information, question assumptions, and challenge conclusions so that they may advocate for solutions based on analysis; and where they are able to voice their individual concerns before reaching a collective decision, which, once made, is supported by the entire board.
